Congratulations to the 2011 Ray DeVries Memorial Scholarship Winners!
Sydney Rathbun, daughter of Kirk and Kelly Rathbun of Benton County, is a junior at Washington State University. Many of Sydney’s activities have centered around agriculture. She served as the WSU College of Ag Senate representative in 2010, has attended the National Farm Bureau Convention for the last three years and is active in the Young Farmers and Ranchers program. She is currently working on an undergraduate degree in Agriculture Technology and Production Management. Sydney plans to return to agriculture, using technology for use in growing, marketing and selling crops.
Brady Irwin, son of George and Paddy Irwin, is a fifth generation cattle rancher. He is a junior at Washington State University seeking his undergraduate in Agricultural Food Systems – Economics, with plans to get his Masters in Agricultural Economics in the next three years. Brady’s memories of his childhood are filled with life on his family’s farm. In high school he was heavily involved in both FFA and 4-H, as well as student government. He sees the need for friends of Agriculture in state government, and has played an active role in staying informed on issues that affect farmers at a state level. After Brady completes his degree, he plans to spend time in either Agra-chemical or finance, learning the industry before pursuing his passion and working in Agricultural policy.
Erika Studeman, daughter of Kasey and Geina Studeman of Lewis County Farm Bureau, is attending Washington State University double majoring in Animal Sciences and Math. She then plans to earn her Master’s in Teaching in order to become a high school agriculture and math teacher, as well as a cattle artificial insemination and embryo transfer technician. She has been active in everything from Student Government to coaching a 4th grade girls’ basketball team to the Lewis County Dairy Ambassador. When Erika was in fifth grade she and her father bought their first cow. A few cows later, she had a 4-H project, and now, ten years later she has a herd of 35 Registered Herefords that travel the state to various shows.
Bailey Dezellem, daughter of Todd and Linda Dezellem of Okanogan County Farm Bureau, is majoring in Agricultural Education at Washington State University. Bailey was raised on a farm and by the time she was in high school had taken charge of the family swine herd, managing vaccinations, farrowing and feeding. Bailey has served as District officer for the National FFA Organization on numerous teams including Parliamentary Procedure and judging teams, and having a strong Supervised Agriculture Experience project through my hogs. After she graduates, Bailey plans to work as an agricultural teacher, where she can teach multiple subjects relevant to farming.
Jordyn Hutton, daughter of Dan and Kathy Hutton of Whitman County Farm Bureau, is a junior at Washington State University pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Food Business Economics. While in high school, she was extremely active in FFA, as well as a member of Future Problem Solvers. At WSU, Jordyn has joined the WSU Agriculture Technology and Management Club and the WSU Block and Bridle Club. In 2010 she won the FFA American Degree award for 2010 for the commitment and accomplishments in FFA. After she graduates, Jordyn plans pursue a career in agriculture public relations.
Scholarship Application Deadline is July 10
The submission date for Ray DeVries Memorial Scholarship program applications is July 10.
Completed student applications, reviewed and submitted by the county Farm Bureau of the applying student, must be postmarked by July 10 and mailed to WFB Agricultural Promotion and Education Committee member

These scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students currently enrolled in agriculture or a related field at an accredited college or university. Applicants must have completed at least one year of secondary education. A person may receive the scholarship only once, and must meet the following requirements.
Applicant must be:
1. A member, or the son, daughter, or legal dependent of a
Farm Bureau member family with a current membership
2. Attending an accredited college/university
3. Enrolled in a field of agriculture, e.g. food science, horticulture, ag technical course, animal science, etc. or in a course as it relates to agriculture
