Congratulations to the 2012 Ray DeVries Memorial Scholarship Winners!

Stephanie GeorgeStephanie George, the daughter of Steve and Ann George of Yakima County is attending Washington State University. Growing up on a farm, Stephanie learned the ins and outs of farming crops and animals. She understand that farmers need advocates in the legal process, and after completing a degree in Agriculture Economics with a double minor in Spanish and Political Science, she plans to go to law school in order to be able to advocate on behalf of farmers, and give them a voice.

 

 

Cheryl Thonney, the daughter of Steven and Kathleen Thonney of Benton County is attending Washington State University seeking an undergrad in Agriculture Education.  Ever since third grade Cheryl’s goal has been to become a teacher. Seeing the benefit of her agriculture science classes and FFA, she realized she wanted to teach high school agriculture in order to play an active role in educating the next generation.

 

 

 

 

Kevin Moe, the son of Mike and Evie Moe of King-Pierce County is attending Washington State University, seeking a degree in Ag Food Systems and Ag Technologies and Production Management. He is YF&R chair for King/Pierce County, as well as involved in the YF&R Collegiate. He has been involved in many different elements of farming, and seeks to use his degree to continue to help improve the way we use technology in farming.

 

 

Hillary Peters, daughter of Bob and Shawn Peters of Lewis County, is attending Washington State University seeking a major in Agriculture Education with emphasis in Agriculture and Technology management. During high school she was involved in FFA, conducting an in depth advanced biotechnology project. Since attending WSU she has been a student research assistant with the USDA ARS. Hillary’s goal is to become an Agriculture teacher.

 

 

Amanda Schmidt, daughter of Jeff and Pam Schmidt of Adams County is attending Yakima Valley Community College. Over the last eleven years she has participated in 4-H, Washington Jr. Angus Association, FFA and FBLA - often in leadership roles. Growing up on JR Ranch she learned to prepare and show cattle, as well as helping with vaccinating cattle and operate equipment for ranch chores. She is working on a degree in Veterinary Technology. Amanda plans on working in a mixed practice clinic, allowing her to work with both large and small animals.

 

Scholarship Application Deadline is July 10

Completed student applications, reviewed and submitted by the county Farm Bureau of the applying student, must be postmarked by July 10 and mailed to WFB Agricultural Promotion and Education Committee member:

Each year the Washington Farm Bureau offers up to five (5) $2,000 scholarships as part of the Ray DeVries Memorial Scholarship program.

UW campusThese scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students currently enrolled in agriculture or a related field at an accredited college or university. Applicants must have completed at least one year of secondary education. A person may receive the scholarship only once, and must meet the following requirements.

Applicant must be:

1. A member, or the son, daughter, or legal dependent of aWSU campus Farm Bureau member family with a current membership

2. Attending an accredited college/university

3. Enrolled in a field of agriculture, e.g. food science, horticulture, ag technical course, animal science, etc. or in a course as it relates to agriculture
