Safe Driving
October 8, 2007 - 12:04pm
Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of accidental deaths in Washington and the United States. By taking precautions and remaining very alert, you can avoid becoming an accident statistic.
1. Do not tailgate.
2. Do not demand the right of way.
3. Be aware of other vehicles in all directions around your vehicle.
4. Be aware of potential escape routes in case of emergency.
5. Stay clear of speeders, swerving vehicles, and very slow vehicles.
6. Stay out of any other vehicle's blind spots.
7. Never drive while fatigued, ill, or impaired by alcohol or drugs.
Winter Driving (Fog, Rain, Mud, Snow, and Ice):
1. Turn on your headlights.
2. Slow down! Conditions may require you to drive much slower than the posted speed limit.
3. Carry chains when in snowy areas.
4. If you must pull over, make sure you are completely off the road and turn on your flashers.
5. Have on hand: flashlight, jumper cables, blankets, water, food, first-aid kit, cell phone, and flares.
