Implement Safety

implement safetyAlmost all agricultural operations involve implements of some kind. Safe use of these implements is of prime importance. Most injuries can be prevented by simply following proper procedures and manufacturer's guidelines. Trouble comes from taking shortcuts because you are in a hurry or too impatient to do the job correctly.

The following is a safety checklist for implements:

1.     Follow all manufacturer guidelines. Keep all shields and warnings in place.
2.     Never connect the implement to the tractor while a co-worker stands between the tractor and implement.
3.     All repairs and adjustments to the implement should be made with the tractor and Power Take Off (PTO) powered off. Implements should be lowered to ground level for service and when not in use.
4.     Never allow riders on implements that are not designed for such use.
5.     When transporting or moving an implement, observe the width, height, and length of the implement you are operating. Know the area you are operating in and any associated hazards (i.e., overhead electrical lines).
6.     Using public highways requires special precautions. The use of flashers, low-moving vehicle (SMV) symbols, and a pace vehicle are recommended.
