Power Take Off PTO Safety

PTO entanglements most often occur when people try to make repairs or adjustments while the PTO is in motion. Remember that a PTO can rotate 1,000 time per minute. That's 16 times per second. Toss a six-foot rope over a spinning PTO shaft and it will wrap up around the shaft in less than a second.

1. Make sure all guards are in place before operating equipment.
2. Disengage the PTO and shut off the tractor before dismounting to clean, repair, service, or adjust equipment.
3. Do not wear loose-fitting clothes or jewelry or long shoelaces.
4. Never stand near or step across a rotating shaft!
