Tailgate Safety Topics
August 2, 2009 - 12:33pm
What is the most effective way to let your employees know you care about their safety and welfare? Simple - talk to them about the importance of safety.
Communicating with your employees on a regular and consistent basis, and encouraging them to bring safety concerns to your attention, will send a message that safety is a priority on your farm or ranch. Face-to-face tailgate training is the most common, and often the most effective, form of safety communication.
This product was created to provide employers with a simple and practical means of conducting tailgate training sessions with their employees. The topics are brief and not intended to be all-inclusive. Rather, our intention is to give farmers and ranchers a starting point to create interactive safety meetings. The safety meetings should be tailored to your specific farm or ranch.
Training is an important part of your WFB Retro/Safety and DOSH required Accident Prevention Program. Short (10-15 minutes), yet frequent, training sessions are recommended.
You should conduct training:
- When you hire a new employee.
- When an employee is given a new job assignment.
- Whenever new equipment, substances, or procedures are introduced in the workplace.
- Whenever the employer is made aware of a new hazard.
- As a refresher or reminder for all employees.
All safety meetings must be documented and should include such details as who attended, the date of the training, and the safety topics discussed.
